A Look at the Common Causes of Teeth Pain and What You Can Do for Relief

Teeth PainTeeth pain is commonly caused by tooth decay.  However, there are additional causes beyond cavities.  In fact, several oral health problems can contribute to teeth pain.  It is imperative you have a full oral health exam conducted to identify the true cause of your teeth pain.

Causes of Teeth Pain Beyond Decay

If the pulp's tooth is irritated, its nerves and tissues will cause pain within the teeth.  This pain is commonly noticed when chewing or sipping on something hot, cold or sweet. Aside from tooth decay, toothaches can also be a result of gum disease, tooth trauma, infection, grinding the teeth, tooth eruption in youngsters and an abnormal bite.

It is also possible for pain to occur that resembles a toothache if the patient suffers from tension along the facial muscles and/or a sinus or ear infection. If your dentist believes your teeth pain is the result of a medical illness, you might need to visit a physician.  In most cases, the cause of the cavity is likely tooth decay or gum disease.

What You can do About Teeth Pain

The first thing to do is visit your dentist.  If your dentist can't see you and the pain is unbearable, visit with an emergency dentist.  You can do a couple things in the meantime before or while you are being transported to the dentist's office.  Mix some salt with water and rinse with it for a minute or two.

If there are food particles trapped in between your chompers, clear them out by flossing in a gentle manner.  You can minimize the pain by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever.  However, placing such a painkiller by the gums of the aching tooth is a mistake as it might burn the tissue.  However, it might help to place an over-the-counter antiseptic on the tooth and gum to decrease the pain while you wait to be seen by the dentist.

Some of those who have experienced teeth pain have enjoyed success with oils of cloves.  Such oils can be applied directly to the sore portion of the mouth.  You can also soak a cotton ball in the oil before applying it.  If you are in considerable pain, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek by the tooth in question.  The application of a cold compress will relieve discomfort and prevent swelling.

Your Best Course of Action is to Visit the Dentist

Above all, your top priority should be visiting the dentist. The dentist will perform a full oral examination to pinpoint the location and cause of the teeth pain, effectively mitigating it to boot.
